Not like, you know, going to them all the time, but more from a business angle. What makes them tick? Who are they for? That kind of stuff.
I figured, maybe there’s an opportunity there, a niche service or product nobody’s thought of. So, my “practice,” if you want to call it that, was to try and map out this world. A real deep dive, or so I thought.
I started by trying to gather info. My approach was:
- Reading anything I could find about luxury markets in the city.
- Trying to chat with people who worked in related industries – hospitality, high-end retail, that sort of thing. Very hush-hush, most of it.
- Looking at general economic indicators, trying to see patterns.
Man, it was like hitting a brick wall. Seriously. Everything was so closed off. You hear whispers, you see the fancy entrances, but getting solid, actual information? Forget about it. It’s not like researching, say, a new coffee shop chain. This was a whole different beast. It felt like they didn’t want to be understood, at least not by outsiders like me just poking around.
I spent a good few months on this. Lots of dead ends. Lots of vague answers. I guess it’s all part of the “exclusive” vibe they go for. If everyone knew everything, it wouldn’t be exclusive anymore, right? My big research project slowly turned into a lesson in humility, I tell ya.
In the end, I had to pull the plug on that specific line of inquiry. The “practice” showed me that some doors are just really, really hard to open if you don’t have the right key, and I definitely didn’t. I learned that sometimes, the most valuable data point is realizing you can’t get the data. A tough pill to swallow, but true.
So, I shifted gears. Moved on to something much more transparent, something where I could actually get my hands on facts and figures. Less mystique, for sure, but a lot less banging my head against the wall. Sometimes, you just gotta know when your “practice” has run its course and it’s time to try something else. That’s life, I guess.
